Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
