Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
