Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
