Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
