Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
