Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
