Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
