Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
