Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
