Be smart, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
