Be smart, play clever, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
