Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
