Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
