Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
