Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
