Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
