Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
