Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
