Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
