Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
