Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
