Be smart, play cunning, and pickup craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
