Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
