Be smart, play smart, and become versed in craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
