Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
