Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
