Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
