Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
