Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
