Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
