Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
