Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
