Be smart, play clever, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
