Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps.
