Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
