Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
