Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
