Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
