Be smart, play smart, and pickup craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
