Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
