Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
