Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
