Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
