Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
