Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
