Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
