Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
