Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
