Be cunning, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
