Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
